The right pre-qualification questions help a coach decide how to respond and help the prospective client understand what the first conversation will cover.
Choose questions from the list below; do not use all of them by default. Every question should change routing, preparation, or the recommended next step.
Goal and context questions
- What would you like to be different after working with a coach?
- What is happening now that makes this important?
- How would you describe the gap between where you are and where you want to be?
- What have you already tried?
- What did you learn from those attempts?
- Why are you considering coaching rather than another kind of support?
These questions establish the desired change without pretending that a form can diagnose the full situation.
Readiness questions
- Why does this matter now?
- When would you ideally begin?
- What time and attention can you realistically give the work?
- What could prevent you from following through?
- What would make the engagement feel worthwhile?
- Are you looking for advice, accountability, practice, reflection, or a combination?
Readiness is not a moral judgment. A person who cannot begin now may need a later follow-up rather than a rejection.
Fit and format questions
- Which topic best describes the support you want?
- Have you worked with a coach before?
- Do you prefer individual, group, or self-directed support?
- Which time zone and meeting windows work for you?
- Is there a particular coaching approach you are seeking or avoiding?
- Is there anything about accessibility or communication that would help you participate?
Use choices when you have a real service boundary. Include “Not sure” when uncertainty is reasonable.
Commercial and decision questions
- Which investment range are you comfortable considering?
- Is anyone else involved in approving or paying for the engagement?
- Are you comparing a specific set of options?
- What information will you need to make a decision?
- If the fit is right, what would the next step need to look like?
Explain why you ask about investment. Use ranges that match actual offers, and do not create a low range that leads nowhere.
Questions to handle carefully
Health, trauma, disability, financial hardship, immigration status, and other sensitive details require a genuine purpose and appropriate safeguards. Do not collect them simply because they might be interesting later.
A coaching intake should not imply clinical diagnosis, emergency support, guaranteed outcomes, or suitability for every person. If your work touches a regulated profession, have the workflow and wording reviewed by an appropriately qualified professional.
A respectful sequence
A concise coaching inquiry can follow this order:
- desired outcome;
- current context;
- why now;
- relevant service or format;
- timeline;
- investment range, if it changes fit;
- contact details;
- anything else the prospect wants you to know.
Conditional branches can show one follow-up only when it is relevant. Someone selecting group coaching does not need to answer questions about individual-session availability.
Decide what each answer changes
Build a small routing table before publishing:
| Signal | Possible route |
|---|---|
| clear fit and readiness | discovery call |
| fit but later timing | resource plus dated follow-up |
| missing context | manual review |
| unsupported service request | clear explanation and alternative |
| sensitive or urgent need outside scope | appropriate support guidance |
Avoid hidden point systems that nobody can explain. If you use AI, give it a written fit policy and require a reason. Preserve an automatic fallback route for unavailable AI.
Put the questions into a useful experience
Qualyo lets you map these questions and outcomes on one visual canvas, then publish the flow as conversational or classic. Start from templates, review the broader coaching sales process, or visit the coaches use-case page.
